When you examine the replay Kante's boot clips Arnautovic's foot bending it and a pen would have been awarded. He goes through Arnautovic to get to the ball.
A bit similar to the pen Italy got against England a couple of weeks back which was only visible with VAR.

It was a great tackle, unfortunately.
I also thought that it was a certain penalty in realtime and, without a shadow of a doubt, if the exact same challenge had of been made on a Chelsea player in our penalty box then they'd have got a spot-kick. No ifs and buts about it.

It’s an impossible call for the ref as he is behind the players and his cue is watching the direction of the ball.
Arnautovic shifts it and Kante kicks through his boot but from behind it appears to be getting the ball.
Though I noticed from the refs reaction (ie none, complete disinterest) that a West Ham player would have to have lost a limb to get a pen.
I think many of them subconsciously expect big team players to be tackled incorrectly by lesser team players but not vice versa.
VAR would have sorted it out which is why the top teams will brief against it.

Decent point and overall we were a tad lucky, but fair play to the team against decent opposition.
3 points next up against Stoke and i think thats us safe for another season and we can all look forward to next seasons relegation scrap!!!!

Looked like a penalty to me in slow motion and in real tie,
He did get the ball and the ball did deviate from the direction the tackle came from, but he took his foot before the ball.
So can understand how the ref thought it was a clean tackle.

In real time I thought it was a penalty, but it looked after replay like a superb tackle from Kante.
Would have been difficult for the ref to be certain, but it was the correct decision, although I 100% agree a penalty would have been given if it were one of our players making that challenge on one of theirs in our box.

I thought it was a definite pen in real time. Didn't need various camera angles and slomo to be any more certain.
